Details
A vulnerability has been found in Oracle Java up to 7 Update 17 (Programming Language Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component 2D. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) component in Oracle Java SE 7 Update 17 and earlier, 6 Update 43 and earlier, 5.0 Update 41 and earlier, and JavaFX 2.2.7 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to 2D, as demonstrated by Joshua Drake during a Pwn2Own competition at CanSecWest 2013.
The weakness was disclosed 04/16/2013 by Joshua Drake as Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2013 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1491 since 01/30/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/08/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65998 (Mac OS X : Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 15), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185051 (HP-UX Running Java5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02922)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13155.
