Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Oracle Java up to 7 Update 17 (Programming Language Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the component Java Runtime Environment. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) component in Oracle Java SE 7 Update 17 and earlier, 6 Update 43 and earlier, 5.0 Update 41 and earlier, and JavaFX 2.2.7 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to 2D, as demonstrated by Joshua Drake during a Pwn2Own competition at CanSecWest 2013.
The bug was discovered 11/01/2012. The weakness was released 03/06/2013 by Joshua Drake with Zero Day Initiative as not defined tweet (Twitter). The advisory is available at twitter.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1491 since 01/30/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 125 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65998 (Mac OS X : Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 15), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185051 (HP-UX Running Java5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02922)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
