Oracle Java up to 7 Update 17 Libraries code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Oracle Java up to 7 Update 17. This affects an unknown part of the component Libraries. The manipulation results in code injection. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2013-1488. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Oracle Java up to 7 Update 17 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component Libraries. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) component in Oracle Java SE 7 Update 17 and earlier, and OpenJDK 6 and 7, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors involving reflection, Libraries, "improper toString calls," and the JDBC driver manager, as demonstrated by James Forshaw during a Pwn2Own competition at CanSecWest 2013.

The weakness was shared 04/16/2013 as Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2013 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1488 since 01/30/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/22/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69742 (Amazon Linux AMI : java-1.7.0-openjdk (ALAS-2013-183)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350563 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for java-1.7.0-openjdk: ALAS-2013-183).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13134.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (26135), Tenable (69742) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38727†). Further details are available at zdnet.com. The entries VDB-7986, VDB-7987, VDB-7988 and VDB-8038 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
