Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.3.4 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function hub_activate of the file drivers/usb/core/hub.c of the component Hub-Interface Data Structure Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The hub_activate function in drivers/usb/core/hub.c in the Linux kernel before 4.3.5 does not properly maintain a hub-interface data structure, which allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid memory access and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by unplugging a USB hub device.
The weakness was released 04/27/2016 by Alex (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8816 since 02/22/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89122 (Debian DSA-3503-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168985 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1764-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (89122) and SecurityFocus (BID 83363†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-82955, VDB-82956, VDB-82957 and VDB-82958. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
