Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.0 (Operating System). Affected is the function snd_timer_interrupt of the file sound/core/timer.c of the component IOCTL Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The snd_timer_interrupt function in sound/core/timer.c in the Linux kernel before 4.4.1 does not properly maintain a certain linked list, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (race condition and system crash) via a crafted ioctl call.
The weakness was released 04/27/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-2545 since 02/22/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89122 (Debian DSA-3503-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157744 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2018-4145)).
Upgrading to version 4.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (89122) and SecurityFocus (BID 83381†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-80982, VDB-81408, VDB-82946 and VDB-82955. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
