Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.0 (Operating System). This issue affects the function queue_delete of the file sound/core/seq/seq_queue.c of the component IOCTL Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the queue_delete function in sound/core/seq/seq_queue.c in the Linux kernel before 4.4.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (use-after-free and system crash) by making an ioctl call at a certain time.
The weakness was published 04/27/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-2544 since 02/22/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89122 (Debian DSA-3503-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157744 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2018-4145)).
Upgrading to version 4.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (89122) and SecurityFocus (BID 83380†). Similar entries are available at VDB-80982, VDB-81408, VDB-82946 and VDB-82956. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
