Linux Kernel up to 4.4 kernel/bpf/verifier.c adjust_branches Kernel Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function adjust_branches of the file kernel/bpf/verifier.c. Executing a manipulation can lead to information disclosure (Kernel Memory). The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-2383. The attack can only be executed locally. There is no exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function adjust_branches of the file kernel/bpf/verifier.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Kernel Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The adjust_branches function in kernel/bpf/verifier.c in the Linux kernel before 4.5 does not consider the delta in the backward-jump case, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by creating a packet filter and then loading crafted BPF instructions.

The weakness was shared 04/27/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-2383 since 02/13/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89966 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2016-669)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196444 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2947-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (89966). The entry VDB-82962 is related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
