Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4 on s390 (Operating System). This affects an unknown part of the file arch/s390/include/asm/mmu_context.h of the component Fork. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The fork implementation in the Linux kernel before 4.5 on s390 platforms mishandles the case of four page-table levels, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted application, related to arch/s390/include/asm/mmu_context.h and arch/s390/include/asm/pgalloc.h.
The weakness was presented 04/27/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at security-tracker.debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-2143 since 01/28/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90531 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1019-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157314 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for kernel (ELSA-2016-2574)-Deprecated).
Upgrading to version 4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (90531) and SecurityFocus (BID 76005†). See VDB-77497, VDB-79923, VDB-82951 and VDB-82963 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
