Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the file arch/x86/mm/tlb.c of the component Paging Structure Access Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in arch/x86/mm/tlb.c in the Linux kernel before 4.4.1 allows local users to gain privileges by triggering access to a paging structure by a different CPU.
The weakness was released 04/27/2016 by Andy Lutomirski (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2069 since 01/25/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88600 (Debian DLA-412-1 : linux-2.6 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157314 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for kernel (ELSA-2016-2574)-Deprecated).
Upgrading to version 4.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88600) and SecurityFocus (BID 81809†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-80804, VDB-82953, VDB-82963 and VDB-82965. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
