Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.5.2 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Netfilter Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The netfilter subsystem in the Linux kernel through 4.5.2 does not validate certain offset fields, which allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via an IPT_SO_SET_REPLACE setsockopt call.
The weakness was presented 04/27/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-3134 since 03/12/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90128 (Fedora 23 : kernel-4.4.6-300.fc23 (2016-02ed08bf15)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157314 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for kernel (ELSA-2016-2574)-Deprecated).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39545), Tenable (90128) and SecurityFocus (BID 84305†). See VDB-81386, VDB-82951, VDB-82953 and VDB-82965 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
