Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in IBM Informix Dynamic Server (Information Management Software) (the affected version unknown). This affects the function getname. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) before 9.40.TC7 and 10.00 before 10.00.TC3, when running on Windows, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long username.
The bug was discovered 01/07/2005. The weakness was presented 07/31/2006 by David Litchfield with Next Generation Security Software (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3853 since 07/26/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 570 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22229 (Informix Dynamic Server Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r.
