A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 (Image Processing Software). This affects an unknown code of the component PUB File Handler. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 does not properly handle NULL values for unspecified data items, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Publisher file, aka "Publisher Incorrect NULL Value Handling Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 05/14/2013 by Will Dorman with CERT as MS13-042 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1323 since 01/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66417 (MS13-042: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2830397)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110210 (Multiple Microsoft Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-042)).

Applying the patch MS13-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
