A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component PUB File Handler. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Integer signedness error in Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Publisher file that triggers an improper memory allocation, aka "Publisher Signed Integer Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 05/14/2013 by Will Dorman with CERT as MS13-042 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1327 since 01/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66417 (MS13-042: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2830397)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110210 (Multiple Microsoft Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-042)).

Applying the patch MS13-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
