A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Word 2003 SP3 (Word Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Shape Data Parser. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a code injection vulnerability. Microsoft Word 2003 SP3 and Word Viewer allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted shape data in a Word document, aka "Word Shape Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2013 by Will Dorman with CERT as MS13-043 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1335 since 01/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66418 (MS13-043: Vulnerability in Microsoft Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2830399)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110211 (Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-043)).
Applying the patch MS13-043 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
