A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Visio 2003 SP3/2007 SP3/2010 SP1 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component XML Parser. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Microsoft Visio 2003 SP3 2007 SP3, and 2010 SP1 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via an XML document containing an external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, aka "XML External Entities Resolution Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 05/14/2013 by Timur Yunusov with Positive Technologies as MS13-044 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1301 since 01/12/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66419 (MS13-044: Vulnerability in Microsoft Visio Could Allow Information Disclosure (2834692)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121175 (Microsoft Visio Information Disclosure Vulnerability (MS13-044)).
Applying the patch MS13-044 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12921.
