CCCrypt in CommonCrypto in Apple iOS before 9.3.2, OS X before 10.11.5, tvOS before 9.2.1, and watchOS before 2.2.1 mishandles return values during key-length calculations, which allows attackers to obtain sensitive information via a crafted app.
The weakness was presented 05/16/2016 by Juwei Lin (moony li) with Google Project Zero as HT206567 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1802 since 01/13/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
An issue existed in the handling of return values in CCCrypt. This issue was addressed through improved key length management.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91311 (Apple TV < 9.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122912 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.5 and Security Update 2016-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-05-16-4)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
