Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.4 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown function of the component CoreCapture. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
CoreCapture in Apple iOS before 9.3.2, OS X before 10.11.5, tvOS before 9.2.1, and watchOS before 2.2.1 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via a crafted app.
The weakness was shared 05/16/2016 by Ian Beer (moony li) with Zero Day Initiative as HT206567 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-1803 since 01/13/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A null pointer dereference was addressed through improved validation.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91311 (Apple TV < 9.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122912 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.5 and Security Update 2016-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-05-16-4)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39925), Tenable (91311) and SecurityFocus (BID 90694†). The entries VDB-87425, VDB-87434, VDB-87435 and VDB-87436 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
