A vulnerability has been found in WordPress up to 4.4.1 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function wp_validate_redirect of the file wp-includes/pluggable.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a redirect vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-601. A web application accepts a user-controlled input that specifies a link to an external site, and uses that link in a Redirect. This simplifies phishing attacks. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Open redirect vulnerability in the wp_validate_redirect function in wp-includes/pluggable.php in WordPress before 4.4.2 allows remote attackers to redirect users to arbitrary web sites and conduct phishing attacks via a malformed URL that triggers incorrect hostname parsing, as demonstrated by an https:example.com URL.
The weakness was presented 05/22/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wordpress.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2221 since 02/04/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1204.001 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
By approaching the search of inurl:wp-includes/pluggable.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88766 (Debian DLA-418-1 : wordpress security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11573 (WordPress Prior to 4.4.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.7.13, 3.8.13, 3.9.11, 4.0.10, 4.1.10, 4.2.7, 4.3.3 or 4.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at core.trac.wordpress.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
