Apple QuickTime before 7.7.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via crafted JPEG data in a movie file.

The weakness was disclosed 05/22/2013 by Tom Gallagher and Paul Bates with Microsoft Vulnerability Research as HT5770 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1020 since 01/10/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66636 (QuickTime < 7.7.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
