Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in X.Org libXt up to 1.1.3. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ReqCleanup/HandleSelectionEvents/ReqTimedOut/HandleNormal/HandleSelectionReplies of the component Graphical Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
X.org libXt 1.1.3 and earlier does not check the return value of the XGetWindowProperty function, which allows X servers to trigger use of an uninitialized pointer and memory corruption via vectors related to the (1) ReqCleanup, (2) HandleSelectionEvents, (3) ReqTimedOut, (4) HandleNormal, and (5) HandleSelectionReplies functions.
The weakness was published 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at x.org. The public release has been coordinated with X.Org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2005 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66564 (Debian DSA-2680-1 : libxt - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350250 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libX11,libXcursor,libXfixes,libXi,libXrandr,libXrender,libXres,libXt,libXv,libXvMC,libXxf86dga,libXxf86vm,libdmx,xorg-x11-proto-devel: ALAS-2014-452).
Upgrading to version 1.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84517), Tenable (66564), SecurityFocus (BID 60133†), OSVDB (93652†) and Secunia (SA53513†). Similar entries are available at VDB-8876, VDB-8877, VDB-8878 and VDB-8879. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
