Details
A vulnerability was found in X.Org libXxf86vm up to 1.1.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function XF86VidModeGetGammaRamp of the component Graphical Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in X.org libXxf86vm 1.1.2 and earlier allows X servers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted length or index values to the XF86VidModeGetGammaRamp function.
The weakness was shared 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at x.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2001 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75047 (openSUSE Security Update : libXxf86vm (openSUSE-SU-2013:1041-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350250 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libX11,libXcursor,libXfixes,libXi,libXrandr,libXrender,libXres,libXt,libXv,libXvMC,libXxf86dga,libXxf86vm,libdmx,xorg-x11-proto-devel: ALAS-2014-452).
Upgrading to version 1.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
