Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in X.Org libX11 1.5.0/1.5.99.901. Affected by this issue is the function GetDatabase/_XimParseStringFile of the component Graphical Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The (1) GetDatabase and (2) _XimParseStringFile functions in X.org libX11 1.5.99.901 (1.6 RC1) and earlier do not restrict the recursion depth when processing directives to include files, which allows X servers to cause a denial of service (stack consumption) via a crafted file.

The weakness was released 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at x.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2004 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66602 (Debian DSA-2693-1 : libx11 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350250 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libX11,libXcursor,libXfixes,libXi,libXrandr,libXrender,libXres,libXt,libXv,libXvMC,libXxf86dga,libXxf86vm,libdmx,xorg-x11-proto-devel: ALAS-2014-452).

Upgrading to version 1.5.99.902 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84496), Tenable (66602), SecurityFocus (BID 60146†), OSVDB (93653†) and Secunia (SA53557†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-8875, VDB-8877, VDB-8878 and VDB-8879. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
