A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in X.Org libXrender up to 0.9.7. Affected by this issue is the function XRenderQueryFilters/XRenderQueryFormats/XRenderQueryPictIndexValues of the component Graphical Library. Multiple integer overflows in X.org libXrender 0.9.7 and earlier allow X servers to trigger allocation of insufficient memory and a buffer overflow via vectors related to the (1) XRenderQueryFilters, (2) XRenderQueryFormats, and (3) XRenderQueryPictIndexValues functions.
The weakness was shared 05/23/2013 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at x.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1987 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75030 (openSUSE Security Update : libXrender (openSUSE-SU-2013:1011-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350250 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libX11,libXcursor,libXfixes,libXi,libXrandr,libXrender,libXres,libXt,libXv,libXvMC,libXxf86dga,libXxf86vm,libdmx,xorg-x11-proto-devel: ALAS-2014-452).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
