A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 47 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was published 08/02/2016 by Carsten Book, Christian Holler, Gary Kwong, Jesse Ruderman, Andrew McCreight, Phil Ringnalda and Philipp (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2016-62 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-2836 since 03/01/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. Mozilla developers and community members reported several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93339 (RHEL 5 / 6 / 7 : thunderbird (RHSA-2016:1809)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157233 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for firefox (ELSA-2016-1551)).
Upgrading to version 48 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
