A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 47 on Linux (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function _cairo_surface_get_extents of the component Cairo Graphics Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The weakness was presented 08/02/2016 by Bert Massop (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2016-65 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2839 since 03/01/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. Security researcher Bert Massop reported a crash in the Cairo graphics layer on Linux systems using the LibAV library included in version 0.10 of the FFmpeg library. This was due to an error when allocating the LibAV header when decoding some videos.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92785 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS : firefox vulnerabilities (USN-3044-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196543 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-3044-1)).
Upgrading to version 48 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
