A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 47 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown part of the component Local File Handler. The weakness was presented 08/02/2016 by Abdulrahman Alqabandi with Zero Day Initiative as MFSA 2016-80 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-5265 since 06/03/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. Security researcher Abdulrahman Alqabandi reported that when a local HTML file resides in the same directory as a malicious local shortcut file, the shortcut can be called by the local page to allow the page to read the contents of local files or directories or to load an arbitrary website in violation of same-origin policy, allowing for data theft. In order for this vulnerability to be triggered, both the malicious HTML file as well as the shortcut must be saved to the same local directory and then loaded from there by a user.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92785 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS : firefox vulnerabilities (USN-3044-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157233 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for firefox (ELSA-2016-1551)).
