Mozilla Firefox before 48.0 on Android allows remote attackers to spoof the address bar via left-to-right characters in conjunction with a right-to-left character set.
The weakness was published 08/02/2016 by Rafay Baloch (musicDespiteEverything) as MFSA 2016-82 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-5267 since 06/03/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
Security researcher Rafay Baloch reported a mechanism to spoof the addressbar in Firefox for Android using right-to-left character sets when combined with left-to-right characters. This can be used to cause only certain portions of the loaded left-to-right character portion of the URL to be displayed, misleading users as to what site is loaded, possibly leading to phishing attacks.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93429 (FreeBSD : Mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (aa1aefe3-6e37-47db-bfda-343ef4acb1b5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370108 (Mozilla Firefox Multiple Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2016-62 to MFSA 2016-84)).
Upgrading to version 48 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
