Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP up to 5.5.35/5.6.21 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function fread of the file ext/standard/file.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the fread function in ext/standard/file.c in PHP before 5.5.36 and 5.6.x before 5.6.22 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via a large integer in the second argument.
The weakness was shared 08/07/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-5096 since 05/26/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
