Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.12.11/2.0.3 (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component USB Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The USB subsystem in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.12 and 2.x before 2.0.4 mishandles class types, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was presented 08/07/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-5354 since 06/09/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91820 (Wireshark 1.12.x < 1.12.12 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175781 (Debian Security Update for wireshark (DSA 3615-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.12 or 2.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
