Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.11/2.0.3 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is the function sscanf of the file wiretap/toshiba.c of the component Toshiba File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
wiretap/toshiba.c in the Toshiba file parser in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.12 and 2.x before 2.0.4 mishandles sscanf unsigned-integer processing, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted file.
The weakness was shared 08/07/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-5355 since 06/09/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
