Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in CPython up to 2.7.11/3.4.4/3.5.1 (Programming Language Software). Affected is the function get_data of the file zipimport.c. The manipulation with the input value -1 leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the get_data function in zipimport.c in CPython (aka Python) before 2.7.12, 3.x before 3.4.5, and 3.5.x before 3.5.2 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a negative data size value, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was shared 09/02/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-5636 since 06/16/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/14/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92271 (Fedora 24 : python (2016-9932f852c7)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176661 (Debian Security Update for python3.4 (DLA 1663-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.7.12, 3.4.5 or 3.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92271) and SecurityFocus (BID 91247†). The entries VDB-80763, VDB-88027, VDB-90422 and VDB-90620 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
