Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in CPython up to 2.7.9/3.4.3 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function HTTPConnectionputheader of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a response splitting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-113. The product receives data from an HTTP agent/component (e.g., web server, proxy, browser, etc.), but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes CR and LF characters before the data is included in outgoing HTTP headers. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
CRLF injection vulnerability in the HTTPConnection.putheader function in urllib2 and urllib in CPython (aka Python) before 2.7.10 and 3.x before 3.4.4 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers via CRLF sequences in a URL.
The weakness was published 09/02/2016 by Guido Vranken (Website). The advisory is shared at blog.blindspotsecurity.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-5699 since 06/16/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93038 (OracleVM 3.3 / 3.4 : python (OVMSA-2016-0099) (httpoxy)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176661 (Debian Security Update for python3.4 (DLA 1663-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.7.10 or 3.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
