Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in FFmpeg 1.2 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function cdg_decode_frame of the file libavcodec/cdgraphics.c of the component Graphics Video Data Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The cdg_decode_frame function in cdgraphics.c in libavcodec in FFmpeg before 1.2.1 does not validate the presence of non-header data in a buffer, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access and application crash) via crafted CD Graphics Video data.
The issue has been introduced in 03/07/2013. The weakness was disclosed 05/07/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ffmpeg.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3674 since 05/24/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 61 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70647 (GLSA-201310-12 : FFmpeg: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84918), Tenable (70647), SecurityFocus (BID 60496†), OSVDB (94165†) and Secunia (SA53825†).
