Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FFmpeg 1.2 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function gif_decode_frame of the file libavcodec/gifdec.c of the component GIF Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The gif_decode_frame function in gifdec.c in libavcodec in FFmpeg before 1.2.1 does not properly manage the disposal methods of frames, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access and application crash) via crafted GIF data.
The issue has been introduced in 03/07/2013. The weakness was presented 05/07/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ffmpeg.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3673 since 05/24/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 61 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70647 (GLSA-201310-12 : FFmpeg: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 1.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
