A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FFmpeg 1.0 (Multimedia Processing Software). This issue affects the function decode_frame_ilbm of the file libavcodec/iff.c of the component Buffer Size Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The decode_frame_ilbm function in libavcodec/iff.c in FFmpeg before 1.1 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via a crafted height value in IFF PBM/ILBM bitmap data.
The issue has been introduced in 09/30/2012. The weakness was published 11/09/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as atrac3dec: Check coding mode against channels. as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0857 since 01/07/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
