A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FFmpeg 1.0 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected is the function lpc_prediction of the file libavcodec/alac.c. The lpc_prediction function in libavcodec/alac.c in FFmpeg before 1.1 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via crafted Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) data, related to a large nb_samples value.
The issue has been introduced in 09/30/2012. The weakness was released 11/10/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as alac: fix nb_samples < order case as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0856 since 01/07/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 41 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
