Details
A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 5.6.25/7.0.10 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function phar_parse_tarfile. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 09/15/2016 as Version 7.0.11 as confirmed changelog (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at php.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-7411. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196592 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Php5, Php7.0 Vulnerabilities (USN-3095-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.6.26 or 7.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
