A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in FFmpeg 1.2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected is the function shorten_decode_frame of the file libavcodec/shorten.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a off-by-one vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-193. A product calculates or uses an incorrect maximum or minimum value that is 1 more, or 1 less, than the correct value. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The issue has been introduced in 05/10/2013. The weakness was shared 05/22/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as shorten: fix "off by padding" bug as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
