A vulnerability has been found in libarchive up to 3.1.x (File Compression Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function __archive_read_get_extract of the file archive_read_extract2.c of the component TAR File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Memory leak in the __archive_read_get_extract function in archive_read_extract2.c in libarchive before 3.2.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a tar file.
The weakness was presented 09/20/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8929 since 06/17/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
