Details
A vulnerability was found in libarchive up to 3.1.x (File Compression Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function archive_read_format_tar_skip of the file archive_read_support_format_tar.c of the component TAR File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the archive_read_format_tar_skip function in archive_read_support_format_tar.c in libarchive before 3.2.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted tar file.
The weakness was disclosed 09/20/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8933 since 06/17/2016.
