The Mozilla Maintenance Service in Mozilla Firefox before 22.0 on Windows does not properly handle inability to launch the Mozilla Updater executable file, which allows local users to gain privileges via vectors involving placement of a Trojan horse executable file at an arbitrary location.

The weakness was released 06/25/2013 by Seb Patane (Paul) as MFSA 2013-62 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1700 since 02/13/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66999 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (b3fcb387-de4b-11e2-b1c6-0025905a4771)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
