A vulnerability has been found in Barracuda SSL VPN 680Vx 2.3.3.193 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Parameter Handler. The manipulation of the argument user/password with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 03/05/2013. The weakness was published 07/01/2013 by Gjoko Krstic (LiquidWorm) with Zero Science Lab as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at zeroscience.mk. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by LiquidWorm (LiquidWorm) and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 95 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 2.3.3.216 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
