A vulnerability was found in Barracuda SSL VPN 680Vx 2.3.3.193 (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file editMessage.do of the component Parameter Handler. The manipulation of the argument policy/resourceName with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 03/05/2013. The weakness was presented 07/01/2013 by Gjoko Krstic (LiquidWorm) with Zero Science Lab as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at zeroscience.mk. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Barracuda. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by LiquidWorm (LiquidWorm) and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 95 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 2.3.3.216 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (26527), OSVDB (94730†) and Secunia (SA53982†). See VDB-9310, VDB-9311, VDB-9312 and VDB-9314 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
