A vulnerability was found in Zoho ManageEngine OpManager 12100/12200 (Network Management Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component EncryptPassword API. The manipulation of the argument EncryptPassword with the input value %10 leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was released 11/20/2016 by Michael Heydon as Multiple issues in OpManager 12100 & 12200 as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with Zoho ManageEngine. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Michael Heydon and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 92 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 12200 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
