Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Zoho ManageEngine OpManager 12100/12200 (Network Management Software). This affects an unknown code block of the file /apiclient/ember/index.jsp of the component Notes. The manipulation with the input value /Inventory/Snapshot/MonitoringDevice/A');%20alert('XSS');nop('/PerfGraph/packetLoss/packetLoss leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Reflected). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity.
The weakness was published 11/20/2016 by Michael Heydon as Multiple issues in OpManager 12100 & 12200 as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with Zoho ManageEngine. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Michael Heydon and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 92 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:apiclient/ember/index.jsp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 12200 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
