A vulnerability has been found in FFmpeg up to 1.2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function decode_init of the file libavcodec/lcldec.c of the component Integer Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as avcodec/lcldec: Check that dimensions are a multiple of the subsample factors as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
