A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 1.2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function cdg_decode_frame of the file libavcodec/cdgraphics.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized resource vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was presented 05/13/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as cdgraphics: initialize buffer as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
