Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Xen (Virtualization Software) (affected version not known). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Array Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The (1) ioport_read and (2) ioport_write functions in Xen, when qemu is used as a device model within Xen, might allow local x86 HVM guest OS administrators to gain qemu process privileges via vectors involving an out-of-range ioport access.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was published 12/06/2016 by yanghongke with Huawei as XSA-199 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9637 since 11/23/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
The code in qemu which implements ioport read/write looks up the specified ioport address in a dispatch table. The argument to the dispatch function is a uint32_t, and is used without a range check, even though the table has entries for only 2^16 ioports.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900047 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169439 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:3174-1)).
