Details
A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version now known). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function net_tx_pkt_init of the file hw/net/net_tx_pkt.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the net_tx_pkt_init function in hw/net/net_tx_pkt.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (QEMU process crash) via the maximum fragmentation count, which triggers an unchecked multiplication and NULL pointer dereference.
The bug was discovered 12/09/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/10/2016 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (Website). The advisory is available at git.qemu.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-6888 since 08/19/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94669 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 16.10 : qemu, qemu-kvm vulnerabilities (USN-3125-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169239 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:2473-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94669) and SecurityFocus (BID 92556†). The entries VDB-90368, VDB-91386, VDB-92520 and VDB-93311 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
