KMail since version 5.3.0 used a QWebEngine based viewer that had JavaScript enabled. Since the generated html is executed in the local file security context by default access to remote and local URLs was enabled.
The bug was discovered 12/23/2016. The weakness was released 12/23/2016 by Albert Astals Cid (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7967 since 09/09/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
